Nine

Andraya felt slightly self-conscious about her attempt to go a tad bit more dramatic with her makeup than usual as she stared at her reflection in Kahlil’s mostly glass cabin door. A cool evening breeze rustled her hair hanging loose from her ponytail and blowing a few strands across her face as she held on tight to a covered ceramic dish with both hands.

“Hey.” Kahlil opened the door, his full mouth spread into a slow, sexy grin as he regarded her with a heated stare that warmed her from the inside out and made her skin...and other parts...tingle. “Thanks for coming.”

When she stepped inside, Kahl leaned down and dropped a kiss onto her cheek, his stubbled chin grazing her skin. Dray inhaled the subtle scent of cedarwood and leather emanating from Kahlil’s freshly showered skin.

Her shoulders tensed, her face and neck suddenly felt too hot. Electricity crackled along her skin and shot down her spine.

“Thanks for the invitation,” Dray stammered.

“What you got there?” He stood back, arms folded. Kahl inhaled deeply, then his dark eyes danced with recognition. “Don’t tell me you brought banana-walnut bread?”

“Homemade and fresh from the oven with that sugar crunch topping you love so much.” Dray held out the still-warm dish, and Kahl accepted it eagerly.

“Just like my mother’s recipe?” The affection in his eyes made her tummy flutter and her heart feel full.

“Actually, it is your mother’s recipe with a few tweaks of my own.” She peeked through the tiny space between her forefinger and thumb.

“But how—”

“Willowvale Springs has a quarterly town magazine now.” Dray grinned, inexplicably thrilled about how elated he was by such a small gift. “Your mom shared her recipe in the town newsletter a couple years back. I’ve been making it ever since. It reminds me of those Saturday afternoons when I hung out at your family’s place trying to avoid my mother teaching me to cook to impress a man someday. Ironic, right?”

Kahlil broke into a deep belly laugh. Dray did, too.

Something about laughing together about a moment rooted in their past...in their history, their friendship...made her heart dance.

It felt good to laugh with Kahl again. Despite the oddness of their open attraction for each other and the fact that they’d kissed twice now.

He took the dish to the kitchen and set it on the counter.

“Seems nothing about this visit is going quite as either of us would’ve anticipated.” He shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans and smiled.

Not true.

As a fifteen-year-old girl, she’d often daydreamed about the two of them dating, getting married and living happily ever after. But it seemed best not to mention that.

Dray resisted the urge to fidget with the ruffled hem of her thigh-length denim minidress. Instead, she lifted the charm worn around her neck, fiddling with it as she glanced around the room. Anywhere but at Kahl. The man looked incredibly delicious in a size smedium black T-shirt that showed off his impressive musculature and a pair of frayed, broken-in jeans that highlighted his perfect hind parts.
